Experimental investigation of eccentric strip footing near existing foundation in sand
Abstract
This paper reports on an experimental study of the effect of an existing foundation on the behaviour of a newly constructed strip footing subjected to eccentric loading in sand. Model tests were conducted in a laboratory tank using dry uniform sand prepared by pluviation. The new footing was tested under centric and eccentric loadings at different eccentricity ratios (e/B) and spacing ratios (x/B) relative to the existing footing. The load–settlement response, ultimate bearing capacity, and influence of the eccentricity direction were evaluated. The results indicate that the bearing capacity decreases with increasing eccentricity and spacing, whereas the soil-structure interaction becomes negligible at x/B ≥ 3, wherein the footing behaves independently. The bearing capacity was consistently higher when the eccentricity was directed towards the existing footing. An eccentric interaction factor (Eζ) was introduced, with a maximum value of 1.40 at x/B = 0.5 for small e/B. Two failure modes were identified, providing valuable insight into the design of closely spaced strip footings under eccentric loading.
