The influence of floor structures on the seismic response of unreinforced masonry buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century in Zagreb

Ivan Volarić, Mislav Stepinac

Abstract

The paper examines structural deficiencies of unreinforced masonry buildings of traditional Zagreb construction practices from Austro-Hungarian period, with an emphasis on the role of floor structures in the transfer and distribution of seismic actions. A historical overview of the development of such structures and building typologies is provided. Special attention is given to the insufficient interconnection of load-bearing elements and the uneven distribution of horizontal forces, which directly affect the seismic resistance of buildings. The paper analyses the properties of the materials used, typical floor plan layouts, and characteristic floor structure systems in Zagreb. Through three representative case studies, different structural system configurations are examined using two strengthening methods, based on which conclusions are drawn regarding the effectiveness of individual interventions.
