Earthquakes in Zagreb area

Veselin Simović

Abstract

An overview of stronger earthquakes that either struck Zagreb or strongly affected the city are presented in the introduction. The most powerful earthquake with the most devastating effects was the one that struck the city on November 9, 1880. This earthquake and its consequences are described in the central part of the paper while a more detailed account of this catastrophe is presented in the monograph "Report on Zagreb earthquake" written by J. Torbar. The significance of this earthquake as an incentive for earthquake studies, which have in fact systematically been performed since that time, is emphasized.
